WE SHOULD KNOW OUR HISTORY

thumbsup.gif Well said and well written. The last people we want to have teach our history is our politicians and the liberal left. None of these people seem to get it right. Their job seems to be to demean everything good that our forefathers did.

We need people of principle who are willing to speak the truth. I'm not sure that there are too many running for public office who have the integrity to do so.

thumbsup.gif Bob,

As usual you're right on. What gets me is why we (the citizens of the United States)ask the country is what it is today? Why has there been so many changes to the worse, than to the better? Why are are same politicians being voted back into office, after we complain so much about them.? I could go on, but I think I made my point.

Negativism is the beginning of the end of success. Right on, Bob.

Think you can get your junior Senator, Ms. Billary, to understand todays column?

thumbsup.gif You can also include some of our Civil War heroes. Some people that I talk to daily never even heard of them, not to mention the great battles. Miss your show........ Fred G

A-men and A-men! You are soooooooo right! It always amazes me how little our "honor roll" students know about the history of this country!!! It saddens me to see what we have allowed to happen in this once great nation! God bless you Bob!

# 8. 2/16/04 6:20 AM by David - Rochester, NY
This is what happens when the anti-American liberal/communist Democrats get in office. Why do people continue to vote for them?

# 9. 2/16/04 6:22 AM by Tom Dey - Springwater, NY
thumbsup.gif You're tilting windmills, Bob. The revisionist hippies have come of age and now redefine the establishment they once deplored. They evaded military service by accumulating degrees in philosophy, political science and education, tuition paid by dad, a WW2 vet. 1984 has arrived a couple decades late, but with a vengeance. For readers who missed the book or movie, the protagonist's job was to rewrite history as directed - and believe the politically-expedient changes. Rent the video, kick back with popcorn and get really depressed!

Bob, you describe the documents defining this nation as inspired by God. Amen to that. Our secular society crucifies them.

# 10. 2/16/04 6:24 AM by Veteran - Rochester, NY
thumbsup.gif I guess now we can add gay marriages to our history. What a shame. What's next, siblings marrying each other? The liberal judges are gonna ruin our heritage in this country for the future.

# 11. 2/16/04 6:38 AM by Greg Bender - Rochester, NY
thumbsdown.gif This is a ridiculous column Bob…. I hope you wrote this to elicit a response and not because you believe it.

The simple facts: Columbus WAS a racist conqueror. We WERE the land of the insane Jim Crow laws. The country and its founding fathers may not have been directed by God, we’ll never know.

You must teach students both sides of the pictures. Students today are taught about America’s wonderful qualities, and given a realistic picture of its founding fathers. Should we lie to students and pretend George Washington never owned slaves?

Teaching one side of the picture without a counterbalance isn’t learning, it’s indoctrination.

Editor's Note: this is the disease that afflicts us

# 12. 2/16/04 6:56 AM by DW - Rush, NY
Well said, Bob. It is a shame that American history is being perverted to instill political correctness. Objectively compared to other countries, this country is the freest and most humane. It is hard to understand self-hatred. In the media, it may be hyperobjectivity - like, if we hate ourselves, we surely can't be biased. Extreme nationalism destroyed Germany in the 30's. Will the opposite, self-loathing, destroy us? And if it does, who will be able to stop the next Hitler?

# 13. 2/16/04 6:57 AM by Suzie - Penfield, NY
thumbsup.gif Part of the problem is lumping the two into one with President's Day. It was better when we had both birthday's on their correct day. Here in this area of NY it doesn't help that winter break is all this week, because President's Day gets completely lost. My second grader on the 16th, brought home a log cabin made from pretzel sticks. They had spent most of the day on Lincoln. Hopefully they will spend as much time on Washington when they go back to school. I have always thought that days given to celebrate accomplishments of people, such as Columbus or Martin Luther King or the presidents, would be better used not as days off from school, but as a day of honor to the person, through different methods.

# 14. 2/16/04 7:26 AM by Alison - Gates
thumbsup.gif I love studying good old-fashioned American History with our kids in our Home School! It's so much more meaningful this time around for me, and my kids think of George Washington as the Great man that he was. Thanks for the great article. We will discuss it today in school to celebrate the presidents on President's Day.

# 15. 2/16/04 7:33 AM by Doug
#11 shows us how so many people want to always bash this country and hate everything all the time. The thing is if it is that bad here "WHY DO THEY LIVE HERE"????? It is a free country if you don't like it go somewhere you like better. That is what I would do if I didn't like it.

# 16. 2/16/04 7:50 AM by rjs - Rochester, NY
thumbsdown.gif Yeah, Bob, lets go on teaching myths rather than truth. God din't inspire those men, greed did in most cases. The schools arn't teaching truth now or ecer.

# 17. 2/16/04 7:55 AM by Donald - Rochester NY
The problem is called vacuosness. Today's educators are poorly trained and poorly educated. Alas, they spent a lot of time and money in a sheltered environment divorced from reality. Can we stop calling them liberals (shopworn) and call them what they really are --- airheads! We need a new political party, the Airheads of America.

# 18. 2/16/04 8:02 AM by Drew - Rochester
It's bad enough that ingorance and politically correct revisionism have destroyed the appreciation of our shared heritage.

Now, apathy and PC dogma cause our government leaders to brazenly ignore our Constitution. For example:

-Want to own a gun? Hopefully, you will be allowed to by the politicians who are turning your right to bear arms into a "privilege" granted by them.

-Want government (other taxpayers) to give you free medical care, free daycare, free transportation? No problem, who cares if the Constitution does not allow such an extraordinary departure from the expressly limited role of government.

-What if you get into a fight and happen to call the other person an un-PC name? You are now guilty of a "hate crime" and will be punished more severely than the other guy, contrary to the double jeopardy and equal protection provisions of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Who needs all that dumb history? Let's just let our current set of government bozos make up the rules as they go along...

Like you Bob I have also been saddened by the fact that our National Holidays have become nothing more than a day off from work for school children and a privledged few. Name a national holiday, Veterans Day, Memorial Day, President's Day (which use to be two holidays Lincoln's Birthday and Washington's Birthday when I was a lad) and almost no one even considers what or whom the holiday was intended to honor. It makes me sick when I see the memories of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln turned into excuses for furniture sales held purportedly to honor them. Better we keep the kids in school and spend the day teaching them why we honor our late Presidents or fallen soldiers. Still I think it does no harm in our studies and teaching to show that these men were human with human frailties once we progress beyond a grade school mentality. Washington was a slave owner, Abraham Lincoln was against slavery but did not consider the Black African race to be equal to that of the white race. All these means as these were men of their times who held beliefs to most others common to their time. That they were impefect does not detract from the greatness of what they accomplished in service to our country. Yes we have little to be proud of in our dealings with the Native American indigenous people we trampled over in our Westward expansion. But the story of mans history throughout time has been one of invasion, conquer and assimilation or annilhation. Many of those we removed and relocated had done the same to the peoples they found there when they arrived. Certainly our history of treatment to African Americans is nothing to be proud of. But as each generation passes and we become more enlightened in our thinking we need to temper our self-flagulation at our previous actions as a nation with the memory of it being a different time in history with a different mentality. Our forefathers were not saints or men without faults nor is our collective history as a nation one of altruism and virtue. But taken in total context the good far outweighs the bad and we should be as ready to celebrate our positives as to berate ourselves for our failings.

thumbsup.gif Bob: Your Article is an excellent one, as usual. I am growing tired of the rotten politics that I see in our country. What has happened to the premise of being kind to your neighbor and treating others as we would like them to treat us? Why can't the Polititians just run on their merit and not bash those who are also running? What has our world come to when we no longer care that a President who holds office ruins the reputation of OUR Whitehouse by having afairs and desicrating our Oval office as the one befor Pres Bush did? Why make things difficult for a man who seems to be trying to run our government as best as he can? Why not back a man who is standing for principle and bringing back the reputation of our great country? I guess I would not make a very good polititian by what seems to be todays standared. Thank goodness for folk like you who bring these things to the attention by having the guts to put it in print.

# 21. 2/16/04 8:46 AM by Dan - Rochester, NY
Well said, Bob. The fact that this country exists is a miracle when one considers what governments looked like before the United States of America. The fact that the wealthy and privileged of this land would risk everything, including their lives, to bring freedom to North America is extraordinary. Everything these men did must be evaluated in the context of the times and not compared to 21st century standards.

# 22. 2/16/04 8:49 AM by Thomas - Fairport
thumbsup.gif I am sick of my kids being able to recite chapter and verse (the sanitized version anyway, not the plagiarizing or philandering) of Martin Luther King's life, but when I ask my first grader who the "Father of Our Country" was or what Abraham Lincoln did, he has no clue. Yes, of course I'll educate him, but when I was a kid, I picked that stuff up from school and Captain Kangaroo.

I don't mean to pick on King, but he was only one of many visible leaders of a movement. His movement evolved into the civil rights industry, one of the most divisive forces in the country today, something that weakens the nation rather than strengthens it. The nation is of course better for his efforts, but making him one of only two people we honor with a national holiday is wrong. Dump King Day, dump Columbus Day.

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson - all made significiant sacrifices and contributions to the creation and definition and shaping of our nation, and their influence continues to resonate today, centuries after they died. A nation that views them as comical pitchmen for mediocre goods is a nation heading in the wrong direction.

# 23. 2/16/04 9:06 AM by Bryan - Honeoye Falls
thumbsup.gif That's why 9/11 should never be a holiday. It would make me SICK to see commercials for "holiday specials" that revolve around this date.

# 24. 2/16/04 9:07 AM by Jack Worthington - Sandy Utah
thumbsup.gif Bob, your comments are on the mark. It would seem truth is becoming a casualty in the revised history of this nation.

Many in media and education are busy attacking the greatness of America in what seems to be an increasingly shrill and negative tone.

Some conservatives add to this caldron by referring to Indians here as "Native Americans" as if those of us born here are not also Native Americans.

We label black people by calling them "African-Americans" instead of simply, as they are, Americans.

This hyphenation to describe any group generates an increasingly onerous division of people into political segments of the population to be manipulated in the pursuit of power. It comes now from both political parties.

Is there a will to change the current divisiveness? Is there courage remaining to challenge those who dispute the goodness and greatness of America?

# 25. 2/16/04 9:08 AM
oh, for pete's sake. if you want to rail against those stupid perennial washington-and-lincoln "does this dining room set come in cherry?" furniture-store ads, i'm right with you. but then you have to turn it into some right-wing diatribe against That Which Offends Goodness And God, and you just come off like some nut.

your column illustrates the biggest problem with reactionary conservative thought: you can't stand that real life doesn't fit into neat little categories -- and anyone who tries to introduce that concept to you is "tearing something down."

you don't get that washington, jefferson, lincoln, et al, were ordinary people -- not superhuman thinkers, not without their flaws, and certainly not agents of the almighty -- and that their ordinary natures are what made their extraordinary accomplishments so noteworthy.

the greatness of our country (and it IS a great country) lies not in its past, but in its ability to shape its own future. our constitution was designed to withhold absolute power from leaders, and (in recognition that times would and must change) to allow itself to be amended to reflect the will of future generations.

our founders didn't want us to deify them, and what makes our country great is that we don't have to. we can take pride in belonging to something bigger than any small group of individuals -- or we could, anyway, if dopes like you would quit looking back and start looking around.

(oh, and there was a country whose students were taught the glories of its former leaders, with the dirty details left out. but i thought you wanted to be different from the soviet union.)

# 26. 2/16/04 9:09 AM by Steve
If anyone has kids in school they know all to well what your talking about even the Catholic Schools distort the truth. In history classes they seem to be obsessed with slavery, migrants, Mexicans, and even the trashing of missionary's. Not to mention science class is obsessed with resources and recycling.

If it weren't for me my son would never get any American History. I make sure when we go to airshows or whatever I through in some historical facts for him.

Even me I never ever learned anything about WW11 in school one of the most important times in US history that says a lot about the filth that runs our schools...

# 27. 2/16/04 9:32 AM by Verne - IL
Personally, I have found it inspiring and amazing what these men accomplished in spite of their flaws. They are not perfect and should not be made out to be but on the other hand their faults should not be emphasized so that their accomplishments are overshadowed.

# 28. 2/16/04 9:35 AM by Art - Rochester
thumbsup.gif Amen!

The Marxists must rewrite history. They and the various flavors of socialists are the pathogens which are spreading the infection. The theories of Marx simply hold no water in the face of historical evidence. Therefore the historical evidence must be wrong, so these dedicated socialists must rewrite the historical evidence to prove their point.

America is the very point of the sharp stick in Marx's eye. America most of all must be denigrated, villified and debased.

This infection must be stopped. And the first treatment our patient needs is the removal of Socilalist indoctrination from the tax supported schools.

# 29. 2/16/04 9:41 AM by Doug - Rochester
thumbsup.gif Bob,

In my opinion one of the best of your articles. As usual you have cut through to the truth. I have with great sadness watched a pattern of turning away from and distorting of the basic truths that our great nation was founded on and the inspired leaders through whom this nation was created. Today in the name of " Balanced " reporting it has turned to just the extreme opposite. it has now become an educational system where hatred of basic truths are fostered and taught as truths. Those who stood for or stand for truth and right are mocked and slandered. Truths are not in the eye of the beholder, they are eternal. Truth and moral principles are not popular because they are absolutes and teach that there are rights and wrongs which do not change simply because they are not popular. As you pointed out, Truth is no longer taught today, and I firmly believe that it is because those in charge of our educational system want us to accept the fact that anything is acceptable , Except for the truth. that there is no need for individual accountability and integrity, because as we all know according to todays mentality, anything is acceptable and it's always someone else fault when we do something wrong. fortunately, there are still a great number of us out here who belive and teach things as they really are , not as some would like them to be.

this is the greatest country in the world. i am a grateful american. i work hard, pay my taxes, and vote. while i hope for a day where all races can come together and live and let live id like to send a special shout out to all my people ---white people---. id like to say hold your head up proud. many of us are made to feel like we should be ashamed of who we are. to all my brothers and sisters do not forget your culture and your great contributions to man kind. do not be afraid to speak your mind just because you are caucasian.i am not such a racist that i suggest we have a white history month-or white entertainment channel-or a white pride festival. im not gonna suggest a certain number of whites should have a specific number of employees in each field of employment. i feel like may the best man or woman fill the position. these things would only serve to divide all americans. we are all human beings just trying to get along. i don't have any hatetred in my heart for anyone my only purpose in my comments is to give some props to a people who are to often beaten down in mind and spirit.------------god bless every one ;-)

Hey Bob, I have always consider myself liberal...I am now also a happy mom of two young children and I agree with you on this one. We don't have to ignore the "negatives" in our history when teaching history. Dispite the negatives great things where brought forth. Young children need the positives first and as they develop into thinking young adults these issues can and should be discussed and taught, keeping in mind that progress and freedom for many has been made like in no other nation. Has anyone seen the animated series on PBS that teaches about the Revolutionary war?

# 32. 2/16/04 10:03 AM by Dan McWiggins - Suffolk, VA
Bob,

There has recently been a lot of noise in the blogosphere about the lack of diversity in the humanities at most of America's elite universities. Duke is the latest example.

As a Ph.D candidate in history, let me tell you that the criticism is completely justified. If the average American knew what is being taught in most history departments at university level they would be outraged. Want gender and race theory? It's there. Want anti-white, anti-Western, anti-dead-white-male bashing? It's there. Want queer theory, Frantz Fanon, MeCHa, Aztlan? It's there. Want a course on British or French diplomatic (ala Gertrude Himmelfarb) or political history? Go someplace else--it's not there.

The academy's history programs, with a few very rare exceptions, teach things that are ideologically slanted to the left and designed to indoctrinate, not educate. I wish it was different but it isn't. Any newly-minted history prof who has a conservative viewpoint (read "normal," for this column's audience)has a very circumscribed set of potential employers. If he isn't willing to teach that everything bad that ever happened is directly attributable to straight white males, he's got a long job search ahead of him.

The U.S. reminds me an awful lot of Spain in 1936.

# 35. 2/16/04 10:32 AM by Jerry - Rochester, NY
thumbsdown.gif I agree that the people you mentioned, Columbus, Washington and Lincoln were great, make that GREAT people. But as all people are, they were flawed. Washington was a slave owner, albeit a good one from what I have read but an owner none the less. He was a Virginian in a time when Virginians were allowed to own slaves and the moral ambiguities of our time were not as well recognized. To ignore the fact that he held slaves is being a party to myth building. Did the fact that he owned slaves detract from his greatness? No it did not. He was a man of his times and must be judged in that light. Was he a great leader for this country, regardless of whether or not he told the truth about chopping down a cherry tree? Yes he was.

Was Lincoln a manipulating politian? Yes, he was. Am I happy that he was? Of course. He was a great president and responsible for holding this country together in the single most challenging time in this nations history. Would he have been in the position to do so had he not been manipulative? Hard to say but I am very happy he was in that position.

Columbus may have treated the people he met here as a conqueror but does that change the fact that he took on an assignment that few people were willing to take on or that he was a courageous man who discovered this continent for the Europeans who eventually settled it? No it doesn't.

Revisionist history is never a good thing when it is presented in a manner that tears at the fabric of this country. Nothing is. However, turning a blind eye to some truth while glorifying other truth isn't a good thing either.

People are people, with potential greatness and potential evil inherent in our species. All great men, even great biblical men had great weakness. What they also possessed was the ability to overcome that weakness to serve humanity on some level that makes the rest of us mere mortals tend to mythologize them in death.

I believe that as a people we have become enlightened enough to accept full truth about our history and accept it for what it is, the greatest story ever told about a nation, with all its contradictions. And to know that that history has resulted in the greatest, most benevolent nation ever conceived on this planet.

thumbsup.gif lonsberry, haven't read your column in a while, but i read it today and the first paragraph made me laugh.

Your so right. About September 11, we were united in patriotism, but look at how quickly that patriotism has faded. The country was united, now we are more divisive then ever.

We need to reunify.

Good luck and keep up the good work?

Are you ever going to be on a radio station again in Rochester NY?

# 37. 2/16/04 11:29 AM by Sue M - Fairport, N.Y.
thumbsup.gif Thank you so very much for writing this column, Bob. It sickens me, to see at every turn, how our founding father's have been ignored in todays educational system. Even on Leno when he has his segment where he asks questions like, "Who was the father of our country?" The answers that come out of these young adults mouths really sicken me....they truly don't know. They don't even know who the present President and Vice President is!!!! I agree, something has to be done. I doubt with all my heart that any of these young adults could pass a test for immigration. Even teaching the English language has gone by the wayside, not to mention, writing long hand. Everyone prints or uses a computer. It happened year's ago that I had the biggest fight with my son's English teacher as the assignment was to write a paragraph on your weekend. I was sick to see what the teacher thought was okay. The teacher's answer to me during a conference when I posed the question about what a high grade he gave my son when even the paragraph my son wrote wasn't even in total sentences was, "We're only interested in the pertinent subject matter not the writing." I went ballistic as I felt if you don't know how to write a sentence how in God's name are you to get that subject matter across to your reader? Yes, Bob, the degradation of history and everything kids are supposed to learn in school has gone downhill. I'm sick about it. Again, thanks for writing such a wonderful and poignant piece.

thumbsup.gif To the nameless coward who typed #25, as well as the rest of the gullible libs, this is not about deifying past great leaders. It's about protecting their status as great leaders instead of deliberately emphasizing the seemiest aspects of their lives (which were considered normal in the times in which they lived). There is absolutely no denying that white males are being denied credit wherever possible. Hey, it's not our fault Churchill, Newton, Einstein, Shakespeare, Beethoven, Da Vinci, you get the picture, were white males. But don't blame the teachers too much. Blame their unions, their professors, and the various boards of regents which have fed them the misinformation. The left is about an agenda. The "right" is only about truth and credit where credit is due.

thumbsup.gif The real irony?...without George Washington's courage and perseverance, all of the 'thumbs-downers' today would be drinking tea and bowing to a queen.

As to your poll...part of me wants to say: a man who cheats on his wife is sneaky, underhanded, dishonest, and corrupt. We had one of those presidents already for 8 tiresome long years. We don't need another any time soon.

But after 23 years of living in quiet desperation, I think I can understand the need to find happiness wherever you can - and it's nobody else's business.

BUT THEY WERE STRONG MEN WHO DID GREAT THINGS WITH THE HELP OF GOD. WE NEED TO CELEBRATE OUR GREAT LEADERS. WE NEED TO RESPECT THEIR LIVES AND MEMORIES. MOST OF ALL WE NEED TO SUPPORT OUR CURRENT PRESIDENT WHO IS OPEN IN HIS LOVE OF GOD,FAMILY AND COUNTRY. THE CURRENT ATTACK ON HIM IS TOTALLY DEPLORABLE...ESPECIALLY IN THE LIGHT OF BILL CLINTON'S ANTI USA MILITARY PROTESTS AND AVOIDANCE OF SERVING AND KERRY'S POST SERVICE ANTI MILITARY SHENANIGANS. WE NEED TO SUPPORT OUR CURRENT LEADERSHIP THROUGH PRAYER, WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT AND THE BALLOT. thumbsup.gif The whackos you speak of wrote in I see. I guess they support the more flawed of the human race like Clinton, Kerry and others. So they are upset that we still cherish the history of a great and proud nation. Too bad. I've seen the terror in other nations where we fought for them and for us. Maybe these history haters could visit those countries today and get a more mature perspective on life. This was one of your very best articles. Keep them coming.

The column today was inspiring, I will read my encyclopedia and brush up on some history. Thanks!

I am concerned about the results of the poll, Whether J.Kerry had an affair or not, as being a factor to upset people. In reality, his personal life is none of the business of anyone else but his family. That is, so long as his actions are not criminal. Having an affair is a far stretch different than telling a lie about guard duty, or some cigar w/an intern, etc.. I believe Kerry will thrash Bush out of office in a giant landslide.

thumbsup.gif Bob, telling the truth, especially pointing out the deception of the political correctness addicts is not conducive to job tenure. However, that is why I admire you! At a time when some cheap politicians (well, I don't really know their price....)are castigating Utah's Legislature for daring to challenge their liberal dogma, you are out inciting such rebelliousness. Keep it up, we need more truth on the airwaves. I hope it does not endanger your career aspirations.

thumbsdown.gif I do not believe that our country's founders were any more inspired by God than any other men. The problems that you preach about are caused by the intense HATE that is in our country and the world. I believe that the greatest source of that hatred is conservative republicans. As long as these people are free to spout their hate on the Radio and TV without response from the true liberty people then this nation will be diminished. I don't want to prevent them from speaking but it would be good to hear from people who truly love liberty.

thumbsup.gif That's been one of my pet peeves for several years now. Every February, we're bombarded with Washington and Lincoln as cartoon caricatures. It just really makes me mad that these great Americans are only known to young people as buffoons. The greatest nation on the earth is heading in the wrong direction. Young people need heroes to look up to. They need to be taught more about these great men.
